I’ve always wondered if Lynch was a fan of Mario Bava or Dario Argento (also a Hitchcock fan, incidentally). I ask because Lynch seems to share their well-developed taste in highly stylised lighting (often with exaggerated use of reds and blues) and detailed set design – not to mention surrealistic, nightmarish horror. In particular, Bava’s “Kill Baby, Kill!” featured a dream-like sequence in which a man, racing through a visually stunning castle interior, ends up chasing after himself; I was surprised to see this sequence and it immediately reminded me of Dale chasing after himself in the Black Lodge. Has anyone else noticed these similarities?
