Join my brother and I when we examine The Rocky Horror Picture Show through both autistic and transgender lenses.
“Siblings on the Spectrum” is brought to you by two brothers on the spectrum – Key and Cameron. They grew up with some similar thoughts, experiences, and struggles. To survive, they adapted and evolved, becoming distinct individuals with diverse talents and skills cultivated in the face of decades of adversity.
Key’s neurodivergence and lived experience as a trans/nonbinary individual informs their work, art and advocacy. After developing PTSD from workplace transphobia, Key left their twenty-year teaching career and is studying to be a psychotherapist. Key is also an actor and recently wrote and directed their first musical for Hamilton Fringe. Key’s drag alter ego, Their Majesty the Queer, exercises their royal prerogative to upset and upend cis/het norms through their atrociously camp performances. Gender trash trigger warning in full effect. Check out Key’s writing about their advocacy work pursuing gender minority equity and human rights and also just general complaining at http://www.thekeyhole.ca . Unlock a trans formed life!
Cameron was diagnosed with autism late in life, while teaching in England. A lifelong mystery was solved. After decades of not knowing why he was ‘different’ and didn’t seem to fit in, it was a mainly positive experience which he is still adapting to. On the positive side, autism has gifted him with a vivid imagination, unique perspectives, distinctive sense of humour and an absurd view of life, which he freely expresses in his books and blog posts. His blog, “Trapped on a Rock Floating in Space”, is a perfect encapsulation of his view of life and his desire to reach out and share ideas with similar-minded individuals. The blog’s tagline sums him up well: “The singular adventures of a lone traveller drifting through time, searching for peace, comfort and meaning.”
Together, these siblings on the spectrum offer unique perspectives and analysis, coupled with original thoughts, feelings and opinions. Please join them as they venture into a variety of issues currently gripping the collective consciousness with an emphasis on dark corners, bubbling undercurrents, fascinating subculture and socio-cultural signposts that often elude the mainstream gaze.
