Episode 1: The Ties that Bind

This is about things I saw down by the bank. It might become a regular series, if I ever get back there. So here goes.

Down by the bank, melting snow slid down towards thirsty trees. Across their roots lay jumbles of old wooden railroad ties, blackened by creosote and too many hot summers; damp and twisted, like burned out wrestlers.

I looked behind me: silent railway tracks. I looked down the bank. How did they get down there? I looked behind me. I looked down the bank. I guess they rolled. One made a break for it; the others followed. Returning to their roots, after years spent working under the man.

The trees looked down at them and thought: holy shit, I hope I don’t end up like that!

That was the situation, down by the bank.
